Comar Instruments have been supplying optics throughout the world for more than thirty years. They are a global leader in off-the-shelf and custom equipment, with a hugely diverse client base.


Comar had an existing website, but with limited functionality. They were keen to embrace e-commerce, with a view to bolstering new sales, and enabling existing clients to order online and therefore reduce account administration.

With a mix of B2B and B2C customers, they required a new site that would cater to the requirements of a varied audience. They also needed to display their wide range of standard optical products and bespoke manufacturing capabilities side by side in a way that would be intuitive to navigate – and simple to manage behind the scenes.

The new site would further need to emphasise their global reach and enable them to expand their footprint in the European and North American markets.


As well as completely overhauling the visual feel of the site, a key requirement of this project was to fully integrate the website functionality with Comar's back-of-house SAP system. For ease of use, it was decided that the website would act as the public face of this system.

The product range is maintained in SAP, so edits need only be done in one place. The website then automatically retrieves product updates from SAP. Orders placed through the site also feed directly back into SAP, so there are no additional order processing requirements. The website also allows for user accounts to be setup and again propagates the information back of house.


By integrating the site in this way, Comar now have a direct sales tool without the need to manage orders and stock in two separate places.

The site generates significant revenue and is seen as a platform for growth within Comar, especially with additional features lined up to increase its contribution to the business and further customer satisfaction.
